If you love working with yarn, you know how important it is to keep your materials in tip-top shape. Whether you’re knitting a cosy jumper or crocheting a delicate shawl, proper yarn care can make all the difference. I’ve learned that treating yarn with a little TLC not only preserves its beauty but also extends the life of your finished projects. Let’s dive into some essential yarn care essentials that will help your yarn and creations stay vibrant and strong for years to come.
Understanding Yarn Care Essentials
Taking care of yarn might seem straightforward, but there’s a bit more to it than just tossing it in a drawer. Different fibres require different handling, and knowing the basics can save you from frustration later on. For example, wool needs gentle treatment to avoid felting, while cotton can handle a bit more robust washing.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Store yarn properly: Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and damage.
Avoid moisture: Yarn loves to stay dry. Dampness can cause mildew or weaken fibres.
Protect from pests: Moths and other critters adore natural fibres, so consider airtight containers, lavender sachets and squish your yarn stash regularly to inspect for tell tale signs of infestation.
Handle gently: When working with yarn, avoid pulling or stretching it too much to maintain its elasticity. Always keep the yarn in the skeins until you are ready to use it. Caking it up in advance can stretch the fibres out and make the end fabric less plush and squishy.
By following these simple steps, you’re already on your way to preserving your yarn’s quality.
How to Wash and Dry Your Yarn Projects
Washing your finished pieces can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially if you’re unsure about the fibre content. But don’t worry - with the right approach, you can keep your garments looking fresh and soft.
Here’s a quick guide:
Check the label: Always start by reading any care instructions on your yarn label.
Hand wash when in doubt: Fill a basin with lukewarm water (no more than 30 degrees is recommended think room temperature) and a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics.
Soak gently: Submerge your item and let it soak for about 10-15 minutes. Avoid rubbing or wringing. Some darker yarns can bleed (commercial can too so be aware it is not just hand dyed yarns) so I recommend investing in some colour catchers. If your knit has darker yarns in colour work with lighter ones this can assist with the colours "muddying".
Rinse carefully: Use cool water to rinse out the soap, supporting the fabric to prevent stretching.
Dry flat: Lay your project on blocking mats or a clean towel, reshape it & pin if required , and let it air dry away from direct heat or sunlight.
If you’re working with synthetic yarns or blends, some can handle machine washing on gentle cycles, but always double-check first.
Can you put yarn in the washer and dryer?
This is a question I get asked a lot! The answer depends on the type of yarn you’re using. Some yarns are machine washable, while others are not.
Superwash wool: This type of wool has been treated to prevent felting and can usually go in the washing machine on a gentle delicates or wool cycle. However, avoid the dryer as heat can still cause shrinkage.
Cotton and acrylic: These fibres are generally more durable and can often be machine washed and dried, but use low heat settings to avoid damage.
Delicate fibres like alpaca, silk, or mohair: These should always be hand washed and dried flat to maintain their softness and shape.
If you’re unsure, it’s safest to hand wash and air dry. Remember, the dryer is often the culprit behind shrinking and felting, so when in doubt, skip it!
Storing Yarn and Finished Projects
Proper storage is a game-changer for keeping your yarn and projects in great condition. Here’s what I recommend:
Use breathable containers: Plastic bins with ventilation holes, organza or cotton bags work well to keep air flowing and prevent moisture build up.
Avoid direct sunlight: Sunlight can fade colours and weaken fibres over time.
Protect finished items: Fold knitted or crocheted pieces carefully and store them flat to avoid stretching. Avoid hanging on coat hangers as yarn has memory and tends to stretch out and distort its shape.
Adding natural repellents like lavender or cedar blocks can help keep moths and bugs at bay without harsh chemicals. I would recommend avoiding moth balls as the strong smell can remain in the yarn fibres even after washing.
Tips for Handling Yarn While Crafting
Taking care of yarn doesn’t stop at storage and washing. How you handle yarn during your crafting sessions matters too!
Keep your hands clean: Oils and dirt from your hands can transfer to yarn, so wash your hands before you start. I also recommend giving your needles a wipe down, I use alcohol wipes from the pharmacy, they are compact and individually wrapped which are in every project bag.
Avoid snagging: Be mindful of jewellery or rough surfaces that might catch and pull fibres. check your finger nails and add a mini nail file to each of your projects bags.
Use smooth tools: High-quality needles and hooks with smooth finishes help prevent splitting and damage. My needle of choice (and one I stock in my store) are the Chiaogoo Red Lace Needles, they are so smooth and easy to use.
Don’t pull too tight: Tension is important, but pulling yarn too tightly can stretch and weaken it. This is a practice makes perfect tip, relax your shoulders, unclench your jaw and enjoy the process.
By treating your yarn gently from start to finish, you’ll enjoy a smoother crafting experience and longer-lasting results.
